And now a brief break from the Holidays..........

I am always on the hunt for nice lines, and details of the

discarded vintage furniture pieces at my favorite local thrift store.

Not long ago, I found this little table that had an inset but nothing

in the inset. It was water stained and the kind of piece most folks

wouldn't look twice at. I wonder if it once hat amazing California pottery tiles inset

in it's former life? Anyway, I could pay for this cutie fast enough

and brought it home to discuss it's future lease on life with Mr. Whimsy.

We decided to make it "beachy" and paint it and paint strips of wood and inset

the strips that were left over from another project.

Here is how the piece turned out! Really adorable and I

am sorry to say this one sold really quick at Whimsy on 7th, but we have lots

in store for you at both our shops so visit us soon!

And, now we can resume to our previously scheduled holiday

thinking..............

Kickin' Off Fall with Avocado Festival and Vintage Bounty

Mr. Avocado scarecrow is loving his life as he welcomed the

25th Anniversary of the Avocado Festival in Carpinteria.

It was an amazing weekend (Oct. 7-9) with a reported
100,000 people came to town! Loved meeting many, many new customers!

Now for a quick pictorial of some new vintage finds at our Linden store.

Summer may be over, but our seaside room is full of great decor for your

sea inspired cottage or any living space that wants some ocean related fun!

Whimsy visits Lindsey and Joey Hickson's vintage Bungalow

Meet Charlie--he is the happiest pup in Carpinteria!

He has a pretty fine home, but wait till you see his owner's abode...
So exciting, that Whimsy's best customers{Lindsey and Joey Hickson} invited us in to see how they furnished their 1914 Craftsman Bungalow that is listed in
"Carpinteria Bungalows and Distinctive Homes" book.

Love the vintage dining table from Whimsy with the mismatched chairs.

The seaside cottage has so much character, with a basement(that used
to be used for wine making back in the day) to a great laundry room with
the original cement sink. Reminds me of the one we salvaged years ago
and sold in Whimsy!

Their craftsman bungalow oodles charm and has been preserved with integrity.

This nook was put together by the Hickson's with more Whimsy finds.

The vintage hutch with original chippy paint

from Whimsy has found the perfect home. Here's a view of dining and living room. The floors have been restored to their

original glory. Love the tall ceilings!

Here is a potting table Alan made out of recycled materials.

How perfect that Lindsey and Joey are using it in their kitchen!

Something new and FRESH has blossomed in the hood!

Tucked in the heart of Old Town Goleta is a wonderful new

addition called Goodland Kitchen.

I felt the vibe instantly. It represents everything I love. Real food from local farms

prepared nutritiously and deliciously .

The details visually also speak loud and clear to me and I asked if I could snap a few to share on

my Whimsy blog. The lemons perched in the window next to my another favorite of mine

Local products fill the artful displays....

Inviting tables welcome you to sit and relax and really enjoy the special food.

The pickles that Julia prepares are the best pickles I have ever tasted!

Having our stores located in the gorgeous seaside town of Carpinteria, California

has inspired a number of themes and windows in our two Whimsy shops.

We thought a beach or seaside wedding window was perfect for June and all

the weddings that happen around this time...

This window has been popular with our customers so far--we have sold many vintage wedding

toppers, and mercury glass seashell candle holders and some old galvanized buckets

with chalkboards painted right on for a number of great concepts you might dream of!

We have always rented our vintage items to some catalogs that shoot around

here like to the great folks at Pottery Barn, and with all the recent requests to

do so, we have officially launched our vintage rental program!

Urban Habitat

An inspirational building with high woodbeamed warehousy ceilings,

is the home to a great furniture and decor business called Urban Home.

We found ourselves there by chance in Burbank, CA.

In between my dreaming of having a Whimsy in this cool space, I admired the feel of the

dark woods and eclectic accessories.

My eyes were open for a cool new light for our dining room and you will

see some really fun ones here!

The wall art was different and really graphic.
Loved the mirrored effect of this grid!

I asked the man working about this straw hanging light which

was more than fun and wild but he wasn't able to locate a price for me!

Needless to say, I am always drawn to the vintage looking

decor! Loved the clockface/mirror.

If you are ever in Burbank, take a stroll into this fun large space

filled to the brim with new, but really cool decor.

A doll of YARD SALE I went to....!

Every year a remote neighborhood has a multi house neighborhood sale

and a few weeks ago, we headed out to this year's version.

It was really a huge disappointment BUT, we walked up a steep driveway to find

the most amazing doll collection I had ever seen in my zillion yard sales I have been to.

I am not a doll person, but can you imagine how long it took to set up her displays?

They were priced for a high end auction, not a yard sale,

so I admired, asked to snap a few pics--then hopped

in our truck to see if we could locate some amazing

treasures somewhere else for our Whimsy shops!

I don't think I ever get tired of Saturday mornings...in fact I

often dream on Friday nights about hitting the perfect sales

and scoring fun fun old finds. Some weekends are dreadful and we come back with very

little--while others we have so much pouring out the sides of the truck--that we have to run home and drop off a load and head out to pick up the rest.

It's almost Friday and ...then you guessed it.............it is Saturday morning and I

get to do my favorite thing----HUNT and GATHER! I love my shopping days!

I instantly fell in love with these adorable face pillows that are screenprinted.

I have a HUGE collection of vintage children's books because I love illustrations.

These pillows are certainly inspired from such books and lovingly handmade and would

be awesome in a child's room thrown on a bed or a chair.

I can see young children playing with them, naming them and enjoying them adorning
their sweet rooms. Each face has a personality with different hair color and some with freckles .

I arranged them in our "Spring" inspired window at Whimsy on Linden, and my original

idea was to have the "Moms" in bird costimes, as if they hatched the adorable pillows--

but I went with fun aqua vintage linen dresses and a simple stated

window to make the faces be the focal point!

Live What You Love

After a few months of a big advertising campaign locally using of one of Whimsy faves-

"Live what you Love"

in our ads, we did a simple window to honor our ads.

Simply stated, it was whites, woods and nuetrals.

I found a great antiques poster out there in blogland and made a timepiece poster to honor

the saying which you can see in these pics.

The time to buy antiques is when you see them.

I guess people got the messages we were quietly trying to convey, and soon

things from the display vanished pretty quickly.

I hope you are spending your time on this great planet and surrounding

yourself with treasures that "speak" to you.

I look around at my home, and even though many of my vases have chips,everything seems less than perfect, and my treasures are estate and flea market finds, I honestly love everything I live with. I am living what I love--my vignettes makes me happy to look at and

bring a special feeling of contentment.

Vintage Junkin' in the Desert!

Over the holidays, we took a drive out to the desert and one stunning

day, drove over to Joshua Tree. Of course we had to hit a few shops and my next

few posts will include some visuals that were rather appealing to me!

What do you think of this artists work? He collected junk and painted, sanded, painted, sanded

and repeated his process and I assume some other magic and created what I

found absolutely stunning!

His use of color and form were beyond words!
The pic below is the back of an old motel chair!

Who knew a stack of film cases and box springs could be so exciting?

They awed me.

Love the colors and my shadow stayed in that spot for way too long!

Everywhere I looked I found something equally pleasing to my senses.

The interiors were just as thrilling.

In Palm Desert, there was a nifty place that I need to go back to ...

called Ace!

A while ago, we were told that Whimsy was going to be featured in the

Winter issue of the gorgeous Carpinteria Magazine.

Our challenge was to create a Fall/Winter look in the heat of summer,

when the photographer was going to shoot for the article.

It was actually a blast to redo an area with a purpose in mind,

and they seemed to appreciate our efforts as they snapped away.

It was wonderful to see the creativity the folks at the
magazine have, as they put together a perfect
selection of photographs for the spread.

It was Cayla's boyfriend's 21st birthday and we headed to Disneyland to help celebrate,

along with 22 of his family members!

Found myself drawn to the color again. Never a shortage in Disneyland,

and California Adventure was all new to me since it was our

first time there so I had fun snapping graphics.

Such a fun day! Disney never lets us down despite the cost of the

tickets and how expensive everything is there, it really is top notch.

A Sweet Yard Sale

But this morning I happened on the sweetest of them all.

A darling young artist created an assortment of eye-popping and I am sure

equally delicious cupcakes in a color scheme after my own heart.

And, while I am on the Specific Carbohydrate regime for health reasons,

I wanted more than anything to buy them all!

The flavors were exotic too, by the way.

Harvest in Summer at Whimsy ?

When we were asked if we could create a "Fall" display for a certain magazine (which we will divulge when it comes out!) that is shooting both Whimsy shops, I thought no problem.

But, mind you, Summer has barely shown up this year--nice and cool---I am not complaining.

So, creating Harvest should be easy, or so I thought.

I decided it was going to just have tones of Harvest and this is what I

managed to come up with.

I love the cursive of the antique immigrant trunks so I featured two of them
on a long vintage Amish wedding table!

I scattered antique family photos throughout the vignette, alongside

silverplate and mercury glass and hammered aluminum.

Had to throw in my whimsical touches--fresh flowers in a 1950's canister set.

And of course a vintage Aunt Jemima bottle turned-bell!

{On the Way to the Yard Sale}

It sounded like the sales I dream of...

In a barn, generations of treasures, ...finally being sold.
It was actually just a few miles away, but down a street I never venture.
A flower {seed} farm was on the same lovely country road.

The Barn was not so easy to find, but on the property I snapped some pics to give you an idea of how my inner-dealer-hunter-gatherer-gal with the vivid imagination- self was simply ready to find this treasure barn and start digging!

What, a lake on the property?! Am I still in Kansas? I mean Santa Barbara!

Remnants that sparked my interest and enthusiasm even more...

This property was seriously gorgeous!

I loved how the 50's yellow dining set was hanging out in one of the gazebos.

Do you see the old structure hiding under the sea of life?!

And another exhibit that struck my country heart.

Oh, you want to know about the sale. I have to say I was so disappointed that I didn't snap one measly picture. Nope. There was nothing. A college guy stored his old junk, and I do mean junk in the barn, which ranged from plastic hampers to ripped towels. No Whimsy worthy treasures there.... but it was well worth the trip!

And, a girl has to dream!

It is now a nuetral pallette with blacks, whites, creams and woods.

It was such a hit that we got cleared out right after I took these pics, and now you will find some unbelievable treasures. Some great mid-century pieces that add a great twist that

we found just this past weekend!

A day before Ethan was to go to Camp Oasis at the Painted Turtle , we had some mother/son time at one of our mutual favorites in Summerland--The Sacred Space.
I can be stressed to the hilt, but when I enter the door, I find myself soothed by the music and ambiance and all the visual splendor of this place. The energy is positive in every way possible.

Ethan decided to read some journal entries, before we added our own.

The peacefulness of the outdoors is inspiring and I think he

says he "could live here" every time we visit.

Crystals and flowers and color everywhere....

Grapes growing from the eaves were a special sight to take in this time...

From the gift shop looking out---imagine a view from your home that was this perfect...

Thank you , son. I am glad we share the same definition of peace and beauty.

Rods and Roses and 4th of July Parade in Carpinteria

There were amazing cars lining the streets in Carpinteria at the wonderful Rods and Roses Car Show on Saturday.
The colors were vibrant and pristine in every way.

When the car show was over, the adorable small town parade began.

Carpinteria is truly an All American town, with a feeling that you stepped back in time,

when life was simpler. I am proud that Whimsy Antiques has two lovely locations in this quaint town.

After a mellow morning of treasure hunting, a.k.a. garage sale-ing,

we followed a few posted signs to treasures, of a natural kind.
A few sweet farmers at Ellwood Canyon Farms offer their amazing organic
produce on an honor system, at a place they call "Honest Man Stand".

"Please take what you please and leave payment in hangin cash box".

Rows of fresh organic produce are sprouting in this little jewel tucked away in a nearby

neighborhood!

Whimsy customers often ask us if our house is like our shops...

Here's a tiny glimpse into our lil' home and yes friends, our house is full of Whimsy !
It's not that we are big fans of CAKE (well, carrot cake is definitely on the radar)--
but we discovered that the first letter of each of our names spelled CAKE and soon that was a theme we used in many rooms...

Here's a boot that never made it into the shops, but many of our finds certainly do !

A common love of decor for me is "painted wood". I love original painted wood and if it's

chippy, I am a big fan. My son always teases me about finding "chippy garden gates in seaside blue". If I did, I would hit the jackpot, in my world of original paint!

Collections of wood skittles is found on my mantle.

The crow was added recently and seemed to find a great home.

Love old mirrors that are far from perfect... and I have several bird collections.

Vintage children's chairs are one of my faves...

Can't say we live in a mansion or even a dreamy seaside cottage, but

we surround ourselves with vintage treasures that make it home.

And, we practice what we preach...LIVE WHAT YOU LOVE

(just like on the prints at Whimsy)!

Ventura Flea Market

Take a quick browse with me as we scope out the

Ventura Flea Market that happened today, June 20th on Father's Day ! It is a bittersweet day for me, as this is my first Father's Day I don't have my father anymore, but it is special to be with my hubby and father of our 2 super teenagers.

Wait, do those 2 words go together--super + teens... Hmmm... ? This adorable rabbit was resting on a tree ready for the hunt!
It reminds me of the one hanging out in our backyard near the apple tree.

Loved all the game pieces..

The seaglass was very appealing,
but I prefer to find mine on the beach one piece at a time..

We really enjoyed the old cool graphics on the game boxes!

I gravitate to the kids toys of yesterday. Love the colors and graphic appeal.

The little painted stools were fun all stacked up in all thier glorious colors!

The monochromatic pallete is also refreshing.
Flea Markets are just the best for people like us, who love JUNK !

Take Steps Los Angeles

The weekend after the Take Steps Santa Barbara Walk was the veteran Los Angeles walk and a small group of us joined the festivities for Crohn's and Colitis Awareness and went to Griffith Park to see what we could learn for our walk next year! 800 people strong and canines joined the fun, and the energy was high and upbeat. We learned, and we enjoyed ourselves.

When I received the call asking me to be on a panel of women entrepreneurs for an upcoming conference,, I found myself a little out of my comfort zone.

Because I felt that way, I knew I had to do it.
I was on a panel of 3 women and we answered questions at the conference about our business and each of us were giving our versions of our business plans, etc. Since I have 3 businesses, I certainly had lots to share. I was invited to stay after and enjoy the rest of the conference put on at the University of California, Santa Barbara byt he Professional Women's Association.
I did stay and went to a few other sessions and absolutely had a growing experience. The lunch was superb and the people I met and chatted with were all amazing.
I left feeling empowered, and realized that was exactly what I needed.

Take Steps Santa Barbara

For the past year, a handful of us took on the inaugral Take Steps Santa Barbara Walk and we met weekly and worked hard trying to get our Walk to be a success, despite not enough PR help from our town....but we held hands with Jo Bender, the Walk Manager based at the Crohns and Colitis headquarters in Los Angeles, and made this important awareness project

become a reality on June 6, 2010.

Making noise , raising awareness and raising funds to find a cure is what the purpose of this walk is and through networking with our tiny committee, we managed to bring 175 people to support our cause.

We had Owen Plant of the Sunshine Brothers play his beautiful tunes for us and he alternated with Rebecca Chapman, who is an amazing 2o year old living with Crohn's Disease, and daughter of one of our commitee members.

My Mom who has Crohn's was relaxing with her Celtics green headband and
enjoying the celebration with her granddaughter (and my daughter) who came to Santa Barbara from UCLA to join us...

Summerland Mercantile Garden Sale

My friend and I headed to a lovely vintage and hand-crafts sale

in a garden hosted by Summerland Mercantile.

Check out the gorgeous birdbath in their veggie garden and the kewpie doll

guarding the growing plants!

Everything was displayed beautifully and we had a great time browsing the treasures and kicking back in the garden enjoying fruit salad and fresh muffins.
I can't wait for the next one! I will keep you posted.

my mother's day

a hike across the lovely bluffs to the beach was the way I spent my morning,

accompanied by my husband and daughter

(who surprised me coming home from college) and her boyfriend.

Cayla and Tony headed down the trail on the way to the bluffs.

The day ended perfect, as well--when my husband drove the kids back to LA, and I
enjoyed a nice dinner out with my son! A lovely Mother's Day, indeed.

turning 51 with vincent, picasso, and other masters

I was supposed to have fun on February 23. I had taken the day off and Alan and I had a full day planned and celebrating my 51st was the reason for the trip to LA. But, my Dad had passed away just a month before and I spent nearly 2 weeks home with the flu, andthen got hit with a COLD,
and had jury duty during the cold from helllll.
But we went to the Getty and stared at the Masters and dreamt of a simple life with a paintbrush in one hand and a kleenex in another!

My own art inspired from a box of umbrellas outside one of the exhibits,

just in case of raining on my parade!

The snow covered mountains of Los Angeles were spectacular on the dreary February day.

I am always in awe of this particular sight at the Getty.

Why did Vincent have to leave the earth so young? No one had his way with color and stroke.

I think this lady in the painting is feeling just like me. Sick.

But, at least her nose isn't bright red and dripping like mine!

For now, I will dream of healthier days, and be thankful that I have a husband and a wonderful life and that I can look at art through teary eyes and cherish the 51 years I have been fortunate enough to walk on this cherished planet and see life through my eyes that turn everything into art.

Rest in peace, Daddy. I will love you forever.

valentine's day in venice

Alan and I headed to Abbott Kinney in Venice on Valentine's Day
I had been home sick for a week and a half so everything looked beautiful to me!

We browsed through some awesome shops.

It was a sparkling Sunday and around 75 degrees. Why do I live in California?

Hmmm....

Love messages were scattered throughout Venice for us to see!

This shop had great items indoors and out...

Found an artist that made these blown glass hearts!

I fell in love with this floral shop and decided it is a career that I must do someday...

The colors displayed throughout the shop were muted and arrangements full of whimsy

It was the perfect place to share with my lovebird on Valentine's Day

The only thing my husband and ever quarrel about is who gets the worm

(or bigger piece of chocolate)!

On December 14, Alan and I celebrated our 23rd Anniversary. It was a Monday morning and we decided to go finish our project at the beach that we had started in the Summer and wanted to find a remote piece of pacific. We knew just where to go and our bliss was found. All the elements of Santa Barbara came together that day and gave us an escape we needed even if it was just an hour or so. It was peaceful and perfect. Cheers to my husband, my best friend, and soulmate.

First Friday November in Carpinteria

Being on the Carpinteria First committee, I have the pleasure of scouting out and hiring local talent to perform at our First Fridays. In November, we had the amazing young singer/songwriter, Emily Rath play at the Seal Fountain venue!
Three young girls found themselves dancing to the infectious music that Emily Rath
wrote and sang for her audience!

Jaret Campisi was also playing this clear Friday night, and his voice and talent wowed all

the audience for the rest of the event!
